pageControl and scrollView Logic NOT in App Delegate

I've been trying for weeks to implement apples pageControl example in my pre-existing App (to which I'd like to add a small photo gallery), but I can't get the scrollView to synthesize with pageControl when the logic is not placed in the App Delegate. I've read many many threads on the subject in this and other forums, so I'm sure a tutorial on this subject would be much appreciated!
