App Scanner now available for iOS Developers

Chimp Studios is proud to announce the release of App Scanner, a shareware tool for iOS developers. App Scanner analyzes iOS code for private APIs that could lead to rejection from the iTunes® App Store.

Indeed a number of high profile app rejections have been in the news since the App Store opened its gates to third party developers in early 2008. While most of these rejections were based on content or themes within the apps, a number of them have also been related to the usage of private APIs. Apple has taken some steps to help developers by posting review guidelines that help shed some light on the black box review process.

Apps may be rejected even if they do not use private APIs. Merely using the same method signatures or instance variable names is often enough to trigger Apple’s® automated checker causing an instant rejection. Developers must be exceptionally careful in how they word their code in order to avoid overlapping private API nomenclature.

It is not too uncommon for developers to use open source code as well as code snippets from the internet in order to save time during development. While this typically pays off very well, occasionally there are private APIs used within that code that can cause app rejection. App Scanner lets developers be proactive about checking that code for potential show stoppers and identifying what classes contain private APIs so that they can track down problematic code quickly.
