Just what "kind of" works, there is no magic bullet here:
- Forums - various things: posts about your app, about you free app, promo codes to get visibility, videos where allowed etc.
- Reviews and ratings - you need some in the app store.
- Press releases. It is not big, but sometimes it can be helpful - you probably need will need a lot of press releases.
- Reviews on websites... they work if the site is popular or very popular. This seems a very hard thing to get. Most site simply ignore your emails.
- Twitter - sometimes a big marketing campaign might work. But it is costly and not very reliable. One time it works, next time - zero effect...
- Sales (price reduction) of the apps. Not always, not often...
