Default Buying Download Promotion Technique

I have been in the app business for quite some time now (since early 2008). Obviously the game has changed tremendously as far as promotion. What worked yesterday does not work today, and what works today will not work tomorrow.

From my experiences, I feel that review sites(except the big ones) and similar things like that do not do well for promotion. Different things work for different apps.

Anyhow, it seems to me that the latest craze in promotion is buying downloads.

Can anyone share their experiences with this promotion technique? Maybe give a list of services (i.e. faad, tapjoy.com, etc...) which offer the buying downloads model? Does it work well for paid apps or free apps with in-app purchases?

Please share your thoughts, I think this will help everyone in the forum.

We used MdotM which offers a CPI based model. It was certainly more effective than Admob although still hard to tell what the long term value of downloaders was once on board and no real targeting offered.

On our end we decided to create our own cross-promotion network to chain our apps together and 3rd parties as well as we reach scale. Its a free 1-1 download trader, a paid layer may be created down the road. I'll let you know how it goes as the first sets of apps get on board. Completely agree that trading or buying downloads (quality downloads vs fluff) is the next wave.

cheers, Michael

I assume you are from get splash. I just joined! I agree with this philosophy. I feel this is the future of increasing downloads.
