Do marketing services really work?

I have been thinking about hiring an iphone app marketing services company to do my marketing for me.

I am pretty good at marketing for myself, but I really want my app thats coming out soon to hit the top of the charts. I think the company efforts + my own can make a success.

Can anyone recommend some good sites or people to promote apps cheaply?

Before I would sign up with any such company, I'd want to see some evidence of an app that was not doing well on its own and then prospered because of the promotion of the marketing company.
