Arrow Why Universal App?

What are advantages of creating a universal app?

If we make two separate apps for iPhone and iPad, then there is chance some people will buy both - which could potentially bring more revenue.

Is there anything else that make universal apps more attractive for developers?

I think the future is definitely in "the cloud" and having all their apps/app data on all their devices instantly at one price will be expected from users.

I am more interested what benefits a universal app brings to developers?

You cannot charge more for a universal app, since if I have an iPhone and would like to buy an app, I do not really care if it is for iPad too.

Some people have multiples devices. The way I look at it though, you should do what is best for your users. Now if your iPad version has a whole bunch of new neat features and changes the UI noticeably to take advantage of the screen size then maybe it is a good idea to make a separate app.

Ok, I know a universal app is better than a regular one. Especiallly if a user has an iPhone and iPad. This is pretty obvious. What is not so obvious how developers benefit from making a universal app?

I see 3 potential benefits for a developer:

1) With a Universal app, you get 1 app listed in two stores so to speak. (ipad and iphone/ipod). So in theory, the sales from both stores could contribute to your store ranking for your one app, instead of having 2 apps with half the # sales. Note: I haven't released a universal app, so I could be wrong here. It's possible the ranking for each version of the store (ipad vs iphone) only takes into account the sales from that store.

2) With fewer products, you can focus any advertising budget on one app instead of spreading it thin across multiple apps.

3) Value to the user is a benefit to the developer. If users have to buy different versions of the same app, they may not be happy. Unhappy customers = bad reviews, which affects your product's image of quality, and can affect sales negatively. It's always in your best interest to try and make your customers happy if you can.

My 3 cents; It's worth more than 2.

If that is true, it would be well worth make a universal app for any developer. Can anybody comment on universal app rating calculation?

Unfortunately, with universal apps, iPhone and iPad sales are separate.

And just a heads up, if your iPad version isn't different from your iPhone version, it will probably get rejected. I say probably because you can't predict what Apple is going to do.

A benefit of a Universal app is a single code base. That's why I do it, since my apps aren't that different graphically on all iOS devices.

One reason to go non-Universal is if your game is graphic heavy and you want to keep the iPhone version under 20mb. You can make a HD version and charge more and put all the high res graphics in that one.

The only issues with a Universal app for me is that you can't tell how many people downloaded it on the iPad vs iPhone, and also sales reports. Although Flurry can be used to track things too.
