Does anyone here have any experience with Free Game Of The Day?
I'm trying to plan the capacity for my game for the time it's featured in Free Game Of The Day promotion. Right now I'm running at about 1000 active players daily. My server, at this stage, can handle 10, perhaps 15 times more load, maybe more if I disable some logging and data integrity checks.
My worry though is that it won't be enough. I was just told by someone who was involved around the FGOTD promotion a year ago, that they received 50-60k downloads in one day. If this number is correct, I *definitely* need to look at upgrading the infrastructure. I was hoping someone here would have more recent experience with it, that would help me plan for it better.

Thanks!
If your game can attract organic growth as well as FGOTD you will get far more than 50-60k.

I used FGOTD for Robot 99 and got around 20k downloads a day. But be careful, you might also receive some negative feedbacks and 1 star rating if the app crashs on old device(iPhone 2/iPod touch 1,2..etc)
Thanks for the info!
When did you run your FGOTD? Was it a long time ago?
You always risk bad ratings, whether you promote the app or not.
I think Dragon Lords works well on most/all platforms, I didn't have any crash complaints so far, even from people using older devices.
Promo, it's a marketing move, you can have the most amazing product and earn $5 a day, purely because people don't know about it. FGOTD is a way to reach hundreds of thousands potential customers who don't know that my game exists.
My game is free with IAP, I'm going to make an item that for that one day will be freely available in the Temple and will become purchasable after that day. That's the incentive for FGOTD.
So far I had just over 10k downloads after the first month. FGOTD has two things for me: it can multiply the number of active players just by that one day AND I have high hopes that it will carry me to the top of the sell charts at least in few countries. If I get there, I should see very good growth in the foreseeable future.
@Aragorn: In your case that sounds plausible.
Then try it
Such things never did any good for me with my paid apps.
I'll give it a go and share the results.
Paid Apps have a completely different mechanics, the only thing you gain from the actions like this is increased visibility, because people who got your app for free are not valuable customers from your point of view.
With my game it's completely different, people who get my game for free are ALL potential customers which may generate revenue in future. I did the math yesterday and I seem to have a quite high conversion rate (I think). Each player I got is worth on average just under $1. Even if I only get 10,000 new players thanks to that action (and I have reasons to believe that it'll be much, much more), it's DEFINITELY worth it.
Right now it's more than enough for my needs, but if things are going to skyrocket to 20x the number of users I have right now I have to prepare for it...
We did FGOTD once and I don't think it's worth it. A month after we did FGOTD we went free ourselves and reached a higher Overall Games rank than we did with FGOTD. It was mainly an experiment, but it still cost us money.
Honestly, the only service I would consider now is FAAD or any FREE free app of the day promotions.
Checked out your app. Honestly, I think you could do mimimum 15-20k downloads per day for a few days with FGOTD. A problem with being free already is that you won't get the free visibility from all those twitter feeds and web sites that show apps that go from paid to free. That will hurt.
If you're IAP conversion ($ per download) is high you should consider it. But first check out the free promotions like DailyAppDream, FreeAppMagic, and those AppGiveaway apps.

15-20k is *definitely* worth it in the long term. Even if my conversion ratio drops by 90%, I'd still be well in the green. And it's hard to put value on increased visibility. I hope that in the end it'll be worth it.
Thanks for the heads up on those other promotions! I had no idea they existed. I was so focused on fixing the game that I didn't do anything to promote it yet. I'll definitely give them a go!
