Default How do you advertise on forums without getting kicked out?

It seems that every time i mention my application on any specialized forums they kick me out...
There must be a way to do this right.
Any suggestions?

Forums mostly have their specialized subforums or threads where you can advertise your app.

Read their forum rules or FAQ.

Here you can advertise in the "shameless advertising" subforum.

Yes thats true for the developer's or mac related forums. There's not such thing in non computer related forums.
My application is for dog owners and I think it would be great if i could reach them through dog related forums.

Be helpful, become a friendly contributing member of said forum.

Throw out a few tidbits for free, after a while put your app in your sig. That's right, sig only for a while.

Once you've become known, wait for someone to start a thread that your particular app addresses, then answer in kind...

Give a little first... yes time and knowledge. Don't **** people off by being a single purpose marketing machine.

Better yet, give some influential forum members some promo codes for your app... that way, if they like it, they might mention it for you... that's when you jump in and say thanks blah blah...

Oh, that's another story.

The problem is, that most admins are arrogant jerks, who fancy themselves too important, because they are running a forum (like that would be so special) and they can't differentiate between unrelated spam and shared interest.

They probably also think, if they let you post a link for free to your topic related app or whatever, they will lose millions and billions of dollars on their advertising plan even if their website never had any advertisement sold.

Don't get me wrong, I am not for spamming. Absolutelly not! I believe in what I am doing that's why I am doing it and I am often annoyed by the stupidity of people, who can't see, if you are a "rush-in-rush-out" spammer, who links any spam on any unrelated forum, or you are somebody, who tries to make people with the same interests aware about something they might be interested in.

The funny thing is, they don't let you "advertise" your thing, that could be helpful for their userbase and maybe it even would do something good for them too, but they let every scam coming through on google adwords and even pray for it being clicked by their precious users, which they try to protect so hard.

/rant OFF

So you have to trick a bit to bring people joy and happyness

If you want to advertise your app for your target group, you have to participate as a totally stranger. I mean, register and post a few posts and then let the link slip through like "hey guys, look what I have found".

Most admins have not even enough IQ to notice or they will be just unsure about it and if you have luck, the link can remain.

Follow my simple words:

"Do not advertise your application, discuss it, and talk about it only"

Does it make some sense? start a topic related to your application, ask people about their views and then you can later put your application name or link as an example or something.

Shameless plugs (e.g. putting ad posts on a board) are lousy when it comes to generating sales. An average post will be read by how many - 100, or 1000 people? Out of these people around 30% (very optimistically) will have iPhone, so you end up, optimistically with 300 people who are your target audience.

Say, optimistically, 5% click through to the app store - that is 15 people. Out of this you might get one or two sales.. Not worth the effort.

Forums are much better though if you work on them long term. Discuss the app with people, listen the feedback, participate in the other discussions... You won't get too many sales because of this, but perhaps some people will fire up about your idea, give you some good suggestions, or write about it on blogs.

Good luck!

The best luck I ever had was at using a Google Alert, somebody asked about my game on Touch Arcade and I got the alert. I jumped on, introduced myself as the developer and replied to his questions. This set off a series of messages from various guys on the site.

So - totally lucky that someone was asking about my game, but it's an absolute must that you are running google alerts so you will know about it when it does happen.

The thread was at: Dice Diving - Touch Arcade

Start with a question, for example something like:

"What are your favorite dog apps?"
Then get back later with your app.

Or start with
"What are your favourite dog apps?
Mine are XXX (god competitor) and YYY (my app)"
