I'm wondering if there is any way you can tell how many people are opening your app on the App store to at least read the description and view the app images?
It would be great if there is a way of doing this..... you could tell for example that 5,000 people read your desciption, and looked at the app images or possibly the reviews.....and out of the 5,000 people, 500 went on to download the app.
This way you could tell if you are falling at the first hurdle.....i.e. your game description needs tweaking, or your app images aren't good enough.
We are getting around 20 downloads a day at the moment, but have absolutely no idea how many people have at least "considered" downloading our app?
Maybe its 25 people.....in which case the game description and app images are ok, and we need to focus more on getting people to find the app in the first place......... but perhaps its 250 people a day, in which case we need to look at why they are looking at the app, and then deciding not to go ahead and download.
for our website we use "STATCOUNTER" which is a really good way of checking out how many people visit your website, and where they came from from other sites.
Its a shame Apple doesn't implement this type of tracking into the AppStore.
Are there any other methods I am not aware of?

Unfortunately they don't offer any such service, if in case we are able to get this we would be able to count the number of visitors as well as the download to visitors ratio. but we dont have this option at all. A very big drawback in terms of marketing.
You register for an iTunes affiliate program (google it up) and you receive a special url. You'll get stats regarding the amount of people who clicked the url vs. the amount of people who purchased the app. And, I think, one or two cents from each purchase
Two downsides - you can only track people who enter via your url, and quite a few advertising systems will not accept redirect urls and will require the direct app store urls.
Nevertheless - you might use this to test the quality of various copies. For example - you put a link to the paid version of your app in a free one. Each day you get say 10-20 buys from it. Then you can perform A/B testing of various copies.

+1
It's linkshare and you get 5% of their purchases. Not only what the link went to, but everything they buy from the App Store for the next 36 hours or something like that.
I recently started tracking via linkshare in my "more games" section. Was surprised at how many clicked it, but disappointed at how many actually bought.

We offer a service similar to this with the AppZilla Showcase. Although we don't have anywhere near the traffic that iTunes does, we do have a few million users, and having Your App featured in AppZilla's Showcase would provide you with the very stats you are seeking. We can tell you how many users saw your app, how many users tapped on your app's icon, how many users viewed your screenshots, how many users watched your video, and how many users tapped on a button to go to your app store page. If you track UDIDs on your side, then we can also ping your server with UDIDs so you can track conversions.
With these stats you can get a good impression of where you may be falling short in the presentation of your app. You can go to our website's showcase page to get more info, and make bookings in our showcase 24 hrs a day. Check Out The AppZilla Showcase

Whilst I can't tell you that, I do find it interesting to see how many views the various app pages on my website get. (f you host on Wordpress, do check out the statistics on the Dashboard page)
Though one app gets 25% as many page views as its daily sales, others (the less successful ones, and I can't be sure if this is just a statistical anomaly as sample numbers are much lower) gets around 400% of page views compared to its daily sales.
The most popular app also has the highest star ratings on the app store, and is something people are probably actively looking for, so that could also explain the difference in results, the purchase decision could have been made that much earlier.
