review sites are a COMPLETE waste of time. For my reasons you can search my previous posts on similar review site threads. In a nutshell, the chances of getting featured by a major review site are infinitesimal unless you have connections or existing hype. And even if you do get reviewed, the boost to your downloads is also pretty tiny (with the exception of perhaps a toucharcade review, which I'm pretty sure you need to exchange sexual favors for at the very least). If you have spare time polish polish polish the app (esp the icon and screenshots). This will give you the best possible chance of success. Good luck.
I operate Apple iPhone iPod iPad and Mac App Giveaway and I get developers emailing me their links to their website and the links to the app store even though I have a HUGE link saying "Developers Submit your App(s)"
If you are going to contact review sites make sure you personalise your message

If not sending emails to review sites, what would you recommend as a way of marketing the app

1. Organise a competition based around the launch of your app.
2. Dont give up on review sites just make sure your approach is different.
3. You are welcome to use Apple iPhone iPod iPad and Mac App Giveaway to promote your paid apps.

I mentioned it at the end of the original post. Polish your app, and make sure your icon and screenshots stand out. Most of your initial visibility will come from within the app store.

I am guessing what you write in the description and app name matter too.
How do people find apps? They do not search icons or screenshots, that's impossible so far in the app store. They type something in the search bar. And if that something matches what you have in your descriptions\name you will have a better chance.
Another thought: it would be good to analyze your competition and at least make sure your icons, name, descriptions and screenshots are better than those from other apps you directly compete with.
