Interesting post this, and many valid points are raised, however, I think it's a no brainer really.
As you've spent the time developing your app and enduring the AppStore process, you are then left with an ongoing marketing effort to show the world your shiny new app. There is only one real natural option. Google. ( Other search engines are available :0) !!
Also, as a quick side note, marketing always sounds hi-flying and expensive and can be daunting, but there are many common sense things you can do that cost you only time and effort.
EG:
You'll read anywhere that you should be submitting your app to all the free review sites out there so immediately they will want to know your website address and maybe more about your app, so even a simple one page site would be better than nothing.

Isn't that the whole point? To tell people? To get Downloads?
In short, if someone is bothered enough to look for your app online, you should be there to greet them. Period.
