Default app website significance

How significant is it to have an app website vs just linking to the itunes page? I feel like people should just link to the itunes page, but I am seeing many app webpages.

Of course it is in important. In the App Store, you can't put things such as a demo video of the App etc which you can on a website. It's where a consumer automatically goes if they want to find out more about the App.

I wouldn't say it is super important, but it is a nice thing to have. Most apps are bought on impulse anyway.

I'd vote that it's a "nice to have" as well. Just another avenue for people to find your app

Yea, it depends on what route you are taking too. If you are trying to build a lot of pre-release buzz and want to build a community around your app, then a website is a huge benefit. It's also good if you want to present a very professional front to your app development company in case you ever start wanting search out investors or funding.

I'd say it depends on the app. It wouldn't even cross my mind to go to Doodlejump's webpage but I'd probably go to Foursquare's page if I were a new user. Put yourself in the user's shoes and try and imagine the reasons (if any) he would want to go. hth

For productivity apps, it can be very helpful to reduce support emails if you have a website with videos explaining how things work, and FAQ's.

Interesting post this, and many valid points are raised, however, I think it's a no brainer really.

As you've spent the time developing your app and enduring the AppStore process, you are then left with an ongoing marketing effort to show the world your shiny new app. There is only one real natural option. Google. ( Other search engines are available :0) !!

Also, as a quick side note, marketing always sounds hi-flying and expensive and can be daunting, but there are many common sense things you can do that cost you only time and effort.

EG:

You'll read anywhere that you should be submitting your app to all the free review sites out there so immediately they will want to know your website address and maybe more about your app, so even a simple one page site would be better than nothing.

I'm a bit suprised that:

Isn't that the whole point? To tell people? To get Downloads?

In short, if someone is bothered enough to look for your app online, you should be there to greet them. Period.
