Maybe... This depends on how many hacked apps are currently in the top 100, haha. I definitely have found the number to increase dramatically to reach any of the top 50's though. A fairly good tracking service a lot of people seem to use is AppAnnie. It's a shame Apple doesn't provide in-depth tracking information but ya take what ya get I suppose. Good luck!

Thank you for adding absolutely nothing to this thread.
Since a short while ago, it seems like Apple changed the way they calculate these lists. It's looking like the average rating of your app is also important. I have an paid iPad app called StackPad Wallpaper Designer who is currently on place 140 in the US App Store and in the top 50 in 4 smaller countries. I'm having only between 15 and 20 downloads a day.
Well isn't the iPad market going to be smaller anyway, Not sure it would
be THAT much smaller but it would be different.
Also, not sure if ratings matter, I've seen many apps with one star
ratings rise to the top. Right now, I just looked at entertainment and
"phone tracker spy pro" is at #3 and they have an average rating of 2 stars
for all of their versions, many 1 star reviews right on the front page.
Not singling this one out, I never tried it, just an example.

Yes iPad market is MUCH smaller.

That is helpful but I was wondering about breaking into the top 100
initially, what kind of numbers do you need. Or did you debut at a rather
high number yourself so maybe you wouldn't have information on the
numbers needed for position 80, 90, 100 or so?
I'm planning to be on the bottom of the list. I am just curious about what it
takes to get visibility on the list in the first place. If it was 150-200 a year ago,
I only imagine that # is higher now that there are more devices and Verizon is
on board, etc.

Around 100 downloads will get you between 90-99. ~150 downloads will bring you closer to position 60.

You forgot to mention that you're #140 in Entertainment, not overall. That's about right.
Figure the iPad market is about 10x smaller than the iPhone market and you'll be close. Where you need about 10 sales to rank 100-125 in iPad Entertainment, you need at least 100 sales to do the same for the iPhone.
And in some of the smaller countries, you can can be vaulted to #1 in a category with only one or two sales.

Yeah, that's right. I didn't mention it because the question was what is takes get in the top 100 in Entertainment. StackPad is not in the overall listings in any country. It was a few days after we got featured on TheNextWeb, but then I was having over 200 downloads a day.
You are also right about the smaller countries. I'm pretty steady between #25 and #30 in a few smal countries, but I don't get more then 2 downloads a day from these countries. The USA market is getting me the most downloads by far.
