I am going to upload my new app after I have finished final testing for each localization. What did you do to create pre-release buzz for the app and what pre-release marketing techniques did you do that works?
I have no pre-release marketing experience so any suggestions are welcomed.
Ability to generate buzz is specific to your market and your particular app. What does your app do? Perhaps you can show us a video trailer?
It's a iPad note-taking app. The video demo is here: YouTube - eNote Taker Demo I have tried AdWords to drive traffic to the website but it is not working well.
Thanks, watched your trailer, looks interesting--but I haven't looked at other note taking apps so I don't know how yours compares.
Right off the top of my head, I don't see how this can get marketing buzz. Are you doing something unique or significantly different that the other note taking apps don't do? (e.g. convert handwritten text to typed text; ability to draw flow diagrams or mind maps; etc)

No, the main focus of the app is simplicity and ease of use rather than putting all possible features in the app and make it clunky like some other apps. For example, Penultimate is very simple but they are the most successful note-taking app on iPad.
Although the app only has pen, highlighter and eraser, you can create many many kinds of notes, and using the same tools, you can also annotate PDFs seamlessly.
Yes, there is not much other apps can't do (many can't do pdf annotation though), but I think the clean and easy-to-understand interface and the seamless experience when taking notes with the app are the differentiators of the app. (The time spent on creating the seamless experience is huge!)
Maybe the app is just not suitable for pre-release buzz.
not sure about prerelease buzz, but on release you should send your promo codes to all the productivity websites like lifehack, zenhabits, etc. Even sites for parents and kids. unless you have a successful brand, i would think most people wont be interested unless they can see it first.
also, is there a way to type an annotation? that would be useful.
That's neat, can you annotate jpgs or normal pictures also?
The app looks clean and polished, well done.
As others said, it's hard to generate the buzz if you dont have the cool extra factor, maybe you should look it in terms of a marathon rather than a sprint.

Yes, I agree with you. Image annotation is planned for later release Need to get the core functionalities right first. I have posted it to the macrumors forum, and so far a few people is interested. That's good news though.

cheers. the app looks fantastic btw.
I am thinking whether I should send info, screenshots and youtube demo to bloggers and review sites before the app is available and provide ad-hoc build if asked. No sure though.
Currently, the app doesn't do typed input. I am afraid it would make the app overly complicated because it may confuse users when mixing handwriting and typed text. (For example, trying to change typed text while you are using the pen tool)
Wow I like the demo. Yeah I don't think the video will create a buzz. However it does show the app well. Ive actually been trying to find a good note taking app for my iPad. I've been trying UPAD lite and it's ok. I'll have to give yours a try

what did you use to create the video?
Canon HFS21 and windows live movie maker. That's why I chose to use their brochure for PDF annotation demo. It's very good but expensive though.
You just have to reach out to everyone you think might be interested and has a following. This means reviewers, productivity websites, get a press release ready, etc. Do you have a twitter and a facebook? Utilize them as much as you can.
It's not a matter of talking a lot, it's talking to the right people!
Here's a question- once the app is submitted and approved, but not released, can you set the price to free and share the download link with people?
I want to give the game out for free to all the supporters on our Kickstarter campaign before we release it to the general public, but I don't know if that's possible though since this would be the first time for us...

It would make sense that it was possibly, but, I don't think the link is live yet - but I know you can redeem with a code before release for sure.
