Which do you think is better as a viral marketing technique.
For twitter it's all about Retweets, for facebook, it's all about sharing.
650 Million people on Facebook, maybe 160 Million on Twitter.
250 Million active daily on facebook, maybe 30 million on Twitter.
Twitter has big reach in Japan, Facebook doesn't.
Which is more likely to allow a message to spread.
a Retweet button to get a special offer, or a facebook like/share button to get a special offer.
secondarily, which is then a better post marketing channel?
Follow on twitter to an app twitter account, or a like for an app page?
Ideally, it's not an or question, however if you're focusing resources on only 1 bang for an app launch, which would you choose and why?

You want both, but I'd absolutely go for Twitter. It's a great way to get the word out. We had a sale in August and all we did was tweet about it and ask for retweets and we got an large increase in sales just from the twitter sphere.
That said, our market is mainly devs and technical people (at least for AV), so your mileage may vary using Twitter to sell to non-techs.

Just started a twitter campaign. Going quite well so far, as we're number 1 in free photo apps in the USA, Japan, Hong Kong & Malaysia. In fact we're top 10 in 26 countries at this very moment in free photo apps.

I use both, but I think that Facebook is better for getting feedback on your app. If I post something on Facebook, I'd usually have 50 comments/replies in about 10 minutes, and the feedback is more useful since you don't have the character limit like Twitter.
For those that use twitter? Is the twitter account tied to your App or to yourself/business.
I have several Facebook pages for each of my apps but my twitter account is for me (the developer). I kind of use it for everything, promotion of all my apps, connect with other devs, etc.

I have a personal account and an account for each app. My thinking is that users of my apps aren't very interested in my hobbies and vice versa. They're following my twitter account for info about the app, not info about my latest zombie defense plan or movie I just saw. When I release a new app, I'll cross post to all my twitter accounts, just once, to help get the word out.

Wow, I find it hard just managing all my Facebook Pages for each of my Apps. If I had a twitter account for each also...I think they'd have like 2 followers each hehe.
Sounds like you got things managed though, so congrats!!
Its quite easy to measure the impact from twitter by looking at retweets etc.
But for facebook its much more difficult to measure because sharing is hidden behind privacy settings so slightly more difficult to gauge.

That's not true if your app is directly publishing content to facebook. Facebook has expanded their insights panel in the last few months to give you quite a bit of information.
For example, my app lets you post photos right to your FB photos. Not only does FB show me how many photos are posted per day, but also how many likes and how many comments those photos generated. In first month of my FB integration, over 15,000 photos have been posted and generated around 5,000 likes and comments.

True.. it would mean that any promotional campaign has to be geared around the mechanics of facebook to gain the insights.

It depends on the app. For apps as special as mine, Twitter doesnt help much. You can get followers fast and even some retweets, but that doesnt mean people read your stuff or are target audience at all. You need followers that have many followers but dont follow many others. But how to make them follow you?
On Facebook you can make friends that sure like your app or post on pages that cover exactly the topic of your app. And that posts arent lost in limbo after seconds.

Is that something FB has setup to let you see those stats? If so how can I get it to show me that too?
It really depends on the quality of followers you get on both. We have a few Twitter followers that are great, always interacting and retweeting. We also have a whole crapload of followers that I'm pretty sure have never read a single one of our tweets.
given only 1 choice, i'd go with twitter. People seem to respond better there even if they are complete strangers.
facebook idea: try building a simple facebook side app that feeds traffic to your iOS app. Eg: if you're building a social game on iOS, make a gift card app that has the same theme for the upcoming Christmas season.

Combine the twitter with Facebook. It's great.
I think if you want to promote a program, on the facebook is better. No only you can make friends but also any who views your pages will leave a comment and suggests some advice.
