I have a couple simple apps on the app store and I want to try and make a game with Cocos2D next. I think an important part of thinking up an idea for the game is analyzing current trends both on and off the app store. For example, Doodle Jump brought the Doodle trend and Chillingo is encouraging the "Zombie" trend. I know someone who is actually making a Doodle Zombie game- smart guy!
So what do you think the next trend will be? I was thinking maybe I should try a retro styled game.
I really want to hear all of your ideas!

Check out the EPIC Unreal engine demo. That SHOULD be the new trend.
+1 video quality 3D games will be brilliant, but i can't find any details about if it's available yet just that it will be or they'll/have be giving it to developers soon/already?
Epic "giving" the Unreal tech to developers? Doubt it -- seriously. I would imagine similar licensing terms to their PC/console engine, which (fortunately) means no developer without a serious bankroll will be using it.

Really?

And Epic is apparently giving away the development kit for free to all Appstore developers! Cant WAIT to see other apps like this.

Give it to developers? LoL. Try 300K for a license.

Epic apparently now offers something called the Unreal Development Kit. The UDK costs $99 plus a 25% royalty on all revenue over $5000 for commercial use, so it actually seems quite affordable by indie devs.
I'm not a game developer, but I'd be curious to know what's different between this and the engine that the big companies license. I was also under the impression that the Unreal engine costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to license.
Well, let's just say that when I state that I doubt Epic will be "giving the tech away", this statement isn't just some off the cuff remark make some Joe Schmoe on an iPhone development forum. I've worked as a professional game developer for decades now, the last 11+ year stint for Dreamworks Interactive and Electronic Arts, and have spent a considerable amount of time working with the Unreal tech. While I don't have the specific financial details, I do know that every project I worked on that used the Unreal engine did require a hefty licensing fee.
Do I know for sure that Epic won't be giving the Unreal iOS tech away? No, I'm not in a position to know that information. But I do know that they are a company that makes money licensing their tech, and I don't feel that they'll be giving the iOS engine -- or any other tech, for that matter -- away for free any time soon. And I'll go with my gut feeling before I believe some random guy on the web posting that they're "apparently giving away the development kit for free".
Ok well despite the fact that's actually what i thought i was actually trying to ask (in my first comment about unreal engine). When will/was it released for iOS?
Personally I like the iPhone platform because most of the games are 2D It's a shame because I really don't like 3D
Given the small size of the iphone screen I don't really think 3D gains you much. 3D is supposed to give you more of a sense of immersion but on such a small screen that experience is very limited.
