I have a quick question that may or may not be easy to answer. I have noticed that on some of the keywords that I think will be used to search for my app in iTunes - I'm shown directly under the "iPhone Apps" category and others require me to click "See All".
On a few of the searches, for example "apft test", it displays 2 apps under the results. When the user clicks "See All", there are a total of 4 apps that show up. It's a little confusing because some searches display far more than 2 apps directly after being searched.
Namely, my question is this, "How do I get displayed on that initial search screen?" And how do I get displayed further up on the list when the search displays many apps? My instincts tell me that it should probably be based on a combination of factors - release date, how relative the search term is, sales, etc. Does anyone know how to move up this ladder?

TO show up in the initial search screen your app name has to match the search. Keywords don't matter. Once the user hits search, then keywords come into play. So the name of your app is actually quite important.
As far as rank goes, as far as I can tell everything is ranked by popularity (number of total downloads). So if you want to be higher on the list, then you need to outsell the others
I found with my app, FlashCards++, that it takes a little time. At first, my app was no where to be found (even when searching the exact name -- I am pretty sure that iTunes ignores special characters like a +). However as I started to get some sales, I have gone up the rankings for main search terms such as "flash cards" to the point now where I am #2. I am very happy to be there - I don't know exactly how it happened but I think it has to do with ratings and the # of sales.

Ratings don't matter. It's a combination of your sales rank and total sales #
I don't think that's correct. I can find numerous examples where apps show up on the initial search but none of the keywords are in the app's name.
Maybe I misinterpreted your post?
I'm referring to the autocomplete on the device. Once you hit search keywords come into play, before then it autocompletes based on title. A lot of people just stop right there so title is important.
Can you give an example where this isn't the case? I've found this to be 100% true in every app store search I've done.
