Is there any way to record the equivalent of a screen shot, but in video, of the app running? I'd like to show it on a website, but I've no idea how (don't have any video recording device apart from the iPhone!). Or what about from the simulator, perhaps? I'd like to be able to show the game in use, or at least more than one image of the app, on the website, but I was going to use a template that really only has room for one screen shot (and I'm not confident about designing my own site from scratch). Or maybe some way to do a slide show with a couple of the screen shots.
(sorry, just saw another message about this same topic that I missed on my first search! I can't work out how to delete this though).
None of the templates for websites that I've seen, nor any of the galleries of app websites, seem to follow the guidelines for using apple artwork (putting the iphone image on a white background, keep in the app store badge in black, etc). Do Apple really check out the website when you submit the app (I'm presuming you have to have it, from what I read in one of the books, but I've not actually submitted anything yet), and can/do they reject your app for a website that doesn't comply to the guidelines? It seems hard to image that they do, when so many of the sites shown off the 'best design' galleries don't follow the rules at all, but maybe the sites were changed after submission?

On Snow Leopard, QuickTime can record the screen, but you might want to use a better tool like iShowU HD

There's also a product from Camtasia that allows you to do a video screen grab of the simulator I believe. Most of those methods are good enough for in depth walk throughs but if you're looking for a slicker 30 second promotional presentation I'd consider going another route. Let me know if you're interested and I'll shoot over some more info.
Thanks. I managed to get a video that was OK using SimCap, I think it was, but in the end I decided that it just looked odd - kind of eerie seeing things move around, and it made the game look really boring, somehow. I decided it might put people off, as it is much better in reality.
So just going to use screen shots. It's a really simple game anyway, and video was kind of cool on the website, but didn't add much.
But I'm still wondering about the website thing - how much do apple check whether you have followed all the guidelines, etc? The template I'm using has the phone picture on a dark background, and it's supposed to be on white.
Will that be a reason for them to reject my app? (this is my first one)
Having a video, even if the app is simple, seems like a good idea. I've just finished submitting my new app to tons of review sites and it seems like some ask for some kind of link to video.
I used iShowU for my video capture. At first I was just going to record it with a video camera but the colors of the screen were all off. So I researched and thought iShowU (and just recording the iphone simulator) was the easiest/fastest solution for me. They have a trial version so if you're not sure if you'll like it just go that route :-)
If you want to see the quick video I threw together in like 40 mins see below:
As far as apple rejecting your app based on the website...I'm not sure they check that really. I submitted an app and my website url was messed up somehow and I'd think apple would have checked that before releasing but nope, had to change it on my own as soon as it went live.
thanks for the link. I hadn't thought about reviewers possibly wanting video. Maybe I'll add it to one of the website tabs or something - or I could just make it and keep it if needed to send. I showed a couple of the children I work with the video (it's a card game) and they all thought it looked far more boring than actually playing the game was (which they love).
I hope they don't check the website. I still need to send in the contract about using the iphone images, etc, don't I - do they check that? I think the pic of the phone is on the wrong colour background, but hopefully it's OK. It looks a lot nicer this way.
Do you get things like the link to you app before it actually goes live, so that you can update the website in time, or do you do that afterwards?
of course I haven't heard back from my testers yet, so it could be that I'm getting way ahead of myself here even thinking about websites, but can't hurt to be prepared!!
I get the itunes link after it goes live (not sure if there's a way to get it beforehand). For my website I usually just make a page with the screens, description, and video etc (without the itunes link) and then when it actually goes live in the App Store I snag the link and just update that one part. You could always just put coming soon instead of a link and then update it once it goes live or something like that :-)
For the video, if you think your app is slow/boring in the video might I suggest speeding it up a bit. I did that with my video, else it would be pretty boring to watch the user change things for a minute or so. So yeah, maybe try speeding up the slower parts of your app in the video and then when you get to some area in your app where things are happening, slow it down to normal speed to show off that feature etc. Or maybe just a bunch of quick cuts showing off different features. There's probably other things you can do but those are the only ones I can think of right now :-)
