As a guy that runs one (yes, I'm tooting my own horn here, but I also think this is an important aspect of promotion techniques) - I get asked a lot if it really makes a difference to hire a PR agency.
Well, its only Wednesday, and I wanted to share how our current active clients are doing:
Im afraid I cannot for the sake of my competition also being around on this board how many clients we manage, but as for the other question, most of the titles we work with, we work with from launch, so starting at position zero. A few clients have had existing apps, all of which are now in much better positions than they were before we got ahold of them.
Unfortunataly I cant give out too much information as our clients are under Non-Disclosure Agreements - all of the information I post has to be public knowledge

Really?? What are you afraid of? Seems if you have a sound business that is working for people you should be bragging about how many clients you have...
The fact that you aren't leads one to the conclusion that either you are:
a) Starved for clients, and don't want to appear weak to your competition
or
b) Have a ton of clients,
b1) And don't want your customers to be able to put your achievements in contexts
b2) S don't want your competitors to know how easy it is to get developers to shell out money for simple PR work.
I don't mean to sound negative, but extraordinary claims like saying you can get people featured do require some amount of proof. If you are as good as you imply I'd defiantly want to be a client, but I'm not sure I could afford you.
I can understand the desire to be a bit skeptical about any service or product that would requiring any financial investment. As for b2 - I will say that PR work is no more simple than development work - we all have our specialties and what we are good at.
Saying how many clients we have does not really give you a good idea of our success rate anyways, as it would be easy to skew those numbers in either direction by deciding what constutuites a client. We have clients that spend $300 with us and simply use our RateMyApp service and that is it, and large brands that spend over $30,000 in one fell swoop in campaigns that cover multiple aspects of PR, Marketing, Social Media and Advertising.
A number I am more comfortable giving you is this -
If I look at all my clients that we do full campaigns for, more than half of them have been featured by Apple (after we started working with them). More than 80% of them have gotten into the top 25 of their categories having not been there before they started working with us.
We by no means assure anyone we can get them featured by Apple, it was just a really great week for alot of our clients and I wanted to share. What we have found is that effective self promotion of your app gets you noticed not only by customers, but by Apple as well. The more you promote yourself, the more likely it is that Apple will notice and help out.

If on the other hand your app has real value, is well done, and has no bugs, PR can help a lot!
BTW, if you do choose an agency, make sure you verify them before handing over any money. Check out their clients and see how successful they are, if they won't give you a list of clients, do not work with them.
