Any way to tell whether a promo code has been used?
I've given out a bunch of promo codes. I'd like to know whether they've been redeemed. Is there any way to do that, other than trying to use the code myself? (Obviously I don't want to use the code myself, because then the person I gave it to wouldn't be able to use it.)

Yeah, in your stats it will show up as a sale for $0.

That's half the battle (updates will also show up as zero). In addition to being no money it will also still have a product code of 1 (7 is an update).
I believe the OP is asking if there is a way to determine if a specific promo code has been used. Let's say I post 20 promo codes here in the forum and 15 get used. Is there a way to tell which 15 codes were used, so I can post the remaining 5 unused codes elsewhere?

Exactly. I haven't figured out how to tell. All I know is not all of the codes I sent out have been used. I do know some sites and people specifically have used them because of web page or iTunes reviews, but the rest- who knows?
As far as posting promo codes in a bundle, in most forums that'll be useless for exposure though. It may gain you some good reviews in iTunes if that's what you're looking for, but it could also backfire! The PM route is not very good either because your thread just ends up with me-too posts of "PM Sent!" and "Darn it, too late" with no discussion of the actual game or app!
I think I'm going to make a couple of contests for Rogue Touch- one of them will have promo codes as prizes, and the other will have a different incentive, in which you'll need to have bought the game to get use of. I'll do them far enough apart to see what affect each has on sales

Yes, that's what I was hoping to be able to figure out.

My scenario is a little different. I sent promo codes to a couple of individual bloggers and didn't get any response. They've written about my software in the past (one of the posted a video of her kid playing our first application), so I thought they'd like a promo code for our new title. I didn't hear back from either one, and I don't believe the promo codes have been redeemed. Not sure, though.

Careful, promo codes are for non-commercial use. Apple might not like that.

I've seen many examples of Promo codes being awarded as "prizes" in the touchArcade forums. At least from the devs that care and are clever enough to devise something other than "here are 20 codes, come and get them" or "PM me for a code". I really hate those type of threads as I mentioned previously... it's basically a feeding frenzy for people who couldn't be bothered to pay a couple of bucks for the app anyway. Do you think they'll help in return? Maybe, but doubtful.
Anyway, a "contest" that gives out promo codes will probably not generate sales either, but may get me some good reviews because someone willing to perform what's required by the rules of this contest is more likely to have a sincere interest in the app or game. That's about all you can hope for when giving away codes to the public. The other contest I have in mind will (hopefully) provide sales because you'll need to own Rogue Touch to benefit from the prize I award
Back to the original topic- it seems there is no way to determine if a specific code has been used then? All I know is there are a few that I passed out that have not been redeemed... no idea who's sitting on them

I'd like to know the same thing. Is it possible to "try" redeeming a code but then not redeem it? That way I could "try" all of my issued codes and see which ones come back as already-redeemed and which don't.
I was seen other apps do that, but be careful, this might be illegal or heavily regulated in some countries.
Yeah, I have been thinking about that a lot lately. I am actually caught up and just submitted a new update to Rogue Touch, so most likely I will time the contest to start the day after the version 1.5 update has been approved.
Maybe I can put the good old "void where prohibited by law" text in my competition posting. Also, as long as I don't go out of my way to pressure people to buy the game I think it'll help. You know, frame this as a "competition to reward our loyal players"... but if you want to become a loyal player to get a shot at the prize, be my guest!
I know the intarwebs are not a place to seek legal advice, especially on a global scale. So anyone looking to do something like this, you better do your homework too

Exactly. I had 15 codes. I gave 4 to family and I had 11 left over. I posted them on Twitter and as far as I can tell, only 9 were redeemed. I'd like to post those other 2 codes back up and gives people a chance to try my app. I can;t find a way to see what codes are free. They expire after 4 weeks so I'd like to see them not go to waste.

Non-commercial means not related to commerce. Definition of commerce is sales and purchases, so if you give out promo codes in a contest, it is non-commercial.
It would be commercial if you sold someone a promo code.
For your important contacts, try gifting the app... you may lose out on your $0.99 or so, but at least you will know if they received it. (Check your purchase history).
There may even be a way to get your money back on non-redeemed gifts, however its Apple, so I wouldn't hold my breath.
The best way to find out if it's been used is to go in the US AppStore (in iTunes on your mac) and try to use the code (while you're LOGGED OFF). If the code has been used it will give you an error message (can't remember the exact message) and if it hasn't been used it will ask you to log in to redeem the code.

Does anyone know another way. This does not work for me. It does for some of the codes but other codes I know have been redeemed say they have not.

You can know by the small "P" character showing beside the Proceeds column.
