Default Can i make a living?

Hi All,

I was recently made redundant from my job, i am from an it desktop support type background and have little to no knowledge of programming. I have recently started the long path of Objective C with the hope of within a year having my first app on the app store and hopefully go on to produce many iphone and android apps.

My question is simple, how much money can i expect to make from creating apps? i know its like saying how long is a peice of string as they all make varying amounts, I have many ideas as do several friends and i believe them to be good. Can i make say £1000 a month with 5 apps or so?

What is the best way to turn an app in to a living? is it through sales of the app or advertising on the app or a mixture of both?

Has anyone got any advice for a new dev in the making?

I appreciate your help and i expect you all may see more of me around the forums in the near future.

Thanks

Steve

Your best bet, if you're intent on going down this route, is to create a suite of apps that you think are appealing, are pretty damn good, are niche - AND set yourself up as a contractor developing apps for others as fallback.

i'm looking to do kind of the same as yourself. im in desktop support but looking to try and make some extra money and decided to learn obj-c. i've got no experience with programming so hoping to try and learn. i found these links which may also help you along.

found this user on youtube who so far has 33 obj-c tutorial videos: macandcomputerhelp's Channel - YouTube

i've also pre-ordered this book from amazon, the previous edition had pretty good reviews. at £14 for the new one its not too bad a loss if the book doesnt turn out to be the best. the book is being released by the end of the year.

thanksfor the tips and the links, I will subscribe to that Gus you tube.

I see you are both English, is the British, market as lucrative as the u.s?

I think these days there are so many people with CC a and mcp quals that the market is flooded and the mobile market is gold mine for obj-c guys.

me English!? how dare you!

I'm not sure how lucrative the british market is compared to the american market, perhaps mark would be in a better position to answer that.

Agreed though that the market is flooded with people who have ccna/mcp etc whenever I do check online for jobs the programming market seems to be better paid.

good luck with it , just for quick info if you aren't aware. once you start making money from the apps you'll need to pay tax on them but you can put your imac, developer license etc as purchases which will help determine if you owe tax or not.

that'll be a big fat zero mate haha, im still learning so haven't got near the stage of submitting any. i've just been looking into the whole tax issue etc.

ive setup my dev account as an individual as it's going to be more a hobby than full time.

only a few weeks, I didn't have a clue beforehand about loops strings etc. i'm finding going through the youtube videos quite useful and my understanding is getting better. im waiting for the book i've pre-ordered to finally be released so i can spend more time in reading and trying out the code.
