iOS 5 Notification (Drag down window)

With iOS 5 there is now the notification 'area' you could call it that when the user drags down from the top this 'area' slides down with widgets or notifications.

While using most apps that i download i noticed that when sliding down from the top the first time it only shows the little 'tab' and needs to be pulled down again to be brought down.

I'm guessing it's something really simple that i'm overlooking but does anyone know how to do this?

I think it's when apps hide the status bar (like games), so you don't accidentally drag it down.
