Sprint iPhone 4S on AT&T

I have two plans, a family plan on Sprint, and a single line on AT&T. I have an upgrade on sprint but my plan doesn't have data and I want the iPhone 4S on my AT&T plan. If I use my sprint upgrade to purchase an iPhone 4S can I use it on the AT&T (US) network and not have it on sprint? The iPhone 4s is a world phone and has a micro-sim slot but I just need to double check, also what process would I have to go through (would I buy the phone ignore sprint activation and just put in my AT&T microsim, or, would I unlock the phone and run it on AT&T)?

It's best to check this with the operator directly.

The phone will be carrier locked. And, I don't think that Sprint will sell you an iPhone 4S without also forcing you to buy a data plan? And on a 2 year contract.
