I for one would rather have them release a free 3GS/cheap 4 and have a low key 4S, than no cheap phone and a 'mega phone'.
It's opening up the iPhone to a whole heap of people who wouldn't otherwise be getting one this Christmas. Namely my two older boys. And all their friends.
I am happy about it because:
3. people saved up their money, but are disappointed now, so don't buy a new phone, so they have money to spend = more sales

I bet they sell more iPhones this Christmas than last Christmas.
They fell when they where 380 at 1 pm(begin keynote) to now the end at 355.
So in 2h they fell 30, it's alot! And Apple was doing so good and reaches 421 not long ago....
There is really no surprise that it wasn't a 5. They were not going to redesign after only one iteration of the iPhone 4 design - that would have been madness from a business sense - think of all the investment for just one product cycle.
If they had called it the 5 and it was still in the 4 shell then people would have complained more.
Bigger screens on phones than what the iPhone has is just the stupidest thing i have ever come across. I used one of the new samsung galaxy whatevers the other day that has a bigger screen - it barely fitted in my pocket, felt heavier and bulkier, looked nasty (design aside I'm just talking about screen real estate here) and all for what? an extra few pixels that make no difference? Its still going to be a tiny screen compared to the 17+ inch screen on your desk. The iPhone screen size is practical, not too big (though i preferred my old samsung flip phones that were the size of a credit card), a great resolution and a simple way to present the same data that these bigger phones have without the extra crap in your pocket.
Hopefully though people will stop crying about the 4S and realise that it is a sweet upgrade, packed full of new hardware that could constitute the name of 5 rather than 4S.
Its just like the movie hype - X movie is the best movie EVER IN THE WORLD OMG OMG GO GO WATCH NOW. That is what everyone is spoon fed the 3 odd months before it hits the big screen. Then people go and watch said movie and it sucks, only though because they were expecting something that cannot ever be delivered - i.e. your imagination on what the best movie ever is. 1+ years down the line you re-watch the movie, maybe its the only thing on TV, and you have forgotten about all the hype the surrounded it and all of a sudden you realise that it is a real sweet movie.
People all expect the world from Apple and their products and the problem with the fact that everyone in the world now watches Apple (unlike 5 years ago) is that they each have their own take on what the next Apple product should be and one product can't please the imagination of millions if not billions of people.
Morale of the story? stay away from the crap rumour sites that actually have very little to no idea (99% of the time just good guesses that anyone with half a brain could figure out) as to what is coming out, and instead be pleasantly surprised when the product comes out of the floor at the conference.
