BrianSlick has a spectacular aura about
Default Personal/Small Business Finance App?

Just tossing this out there in case somebody knows of something handy.

I was a Quicken user for a long time, until I got tired of paying too much money for too few features in upgrades, and also frustrated by the inability to perform certain tasks. Since then, I've used a big spreadsheet to keep track of finances. I gained some of the features that I wanted, but also lost a lot in terms of basics you'd expect from any financial app, and adding/removing accounts is a huge PITA.

I recently started playing around with iBank, with the hopes that I could return to using an actual app instead of my spreadsheet. It's not at all bad for what it does, and if I was still using Quicken, I would probably like it a lot. However, it shares the same limitations that were the driving forces behind creating the spreadsheet in the first place. I've used up the demo period, so I'm now facing the prospect of paying $60 for an app that I already know doesn't do what I want, but not really finding a better alternative.

What I want can be summarized as: I want to look forward. Every financial app out there is really good at tracking your history, and presenting a good picture of the present. They all suck at showing you the future, and allowing you to experiment with future options.

Simple example: Say I have a credit card with a large balance. When the next payment is due, I have several option; pay it off, or pay a portion, either a percentage or a fixed amount. What are the consequences of any of these decisions? I'd like to pay it off completely. Ok, well, in order to do that, I'll need to move some money from my savings account over. But if I do that, I will run out of money when it is time to pay the rent. So I shouldn't pay off the card this month, but perhaps I could next month. Or maybe in 6 months.

Say I get a bonus this month. How can I decide how to spend the money? If I spend it all on a new toy, then it probably doesn't matter much. But maybe I could use it to pay off that credit card faster. Or maybe I could split it, and use some towards credit card and some towards the toy. I'd like to be able to see the numbers. Ideally, I'd like to be able to compare. "This way, you pay off the card 3 months sooner, this way 6 months sooner."

My spreadsheet lets me answer these questions. Want to explore another scenario? Copy document, change some numbers, compare. I have yet to find a single app that lets me do this. Or if they do, I haven't figured out how to do it. If I didn't think it would take me 3 years to accomplish, I'd be pretty tempted to create my own app. I know that some apps are document-based, but the ones I've looked at aren't very good with future transactions.

Pipe dream territory. I currently have:
Personal finances spreadsheet (has some business stuff too)
Business finances spreadsheet
Billings (for timing and invoicing)
(maybe iBank)

So much related data, all separated into different forms or apps. Sure would be nice to have a single app for handling all of this stuff. Since that isn't too likely, I'll settle for something that lets me get rid of the spreadsheet.

Any recommendations?
