I have just finished the coding side of my application that will be named "SocialPic". It is a basic image uploader that can upload images to twitter/facebook/imageshack and email.
My graphics designer has sent me this icon which I believe conveys the uploading side of the app's name and function.
Icon1
However, he then sent me a second icon which I believe conveys both the image uploading side of the application, and the social part of the name.
Icon 2
Which one do you prefer and why?
Do you see any improvements that can be made to either icons?
I think #1 is better. However, the "button" part should be smaller, and he should show bigger portion of the photo. From icon, there is no way i can tell that the paper going into the hole is a "photo".
I like #1 the most, just because it makes it clear that the app has something to do with uploading.
But as Rocotilos said before, it's not clear what the paper on the bottom is... Especially with #2, without knowing what the app does, I wouldn't be sure if the paper is going in or out
iSDK, if I were you I would try to get an icon more colorful, bright or glossy, either if you pick the arrow or the people elements, I would try to get them a bit bigger and prettier, just type "glossy arrow" on google images to get an idea, or if you pick the people elements think on the MS Messenger icon.
For the photo, I agree with the others, it should be clear that it is a photo, check this icon for an example..
one idea that just came to my head is have a glossy icon like this: in the right a picture, in the center a small arrow pointing from left to right, and on the right the people element..
The bottom line is that your icon can be better than what you have, and it is worth to spend $50, remember icons are the first thing users see.. good luck!
I think that the 1st icon is easier to tell what the app does. The 2nd one does show what the app does, but it is kind of hard to tell without reading a description or something. I would maybe have the arrow pointing to the people. It includes both, and will make sense.
do you think one of the icons is worth to pay 50$ for? Keep in mind that it's far from being finished...
TheUnder50DollarDesigner
Sure. However, I would never use it. If your going to jump on the 3D perspective icon bandwagon atleast work on the perspectives. Base is 3d but the arrow is flat. Looks weird.
if you are the designer here I suggest you go over to Dribbble and post your work. The designers will give you tips.
Good luck...
