Hey guys, i have just spun up some of my hard drives that have been sat idle in a draw for quite some time now.
I knew what was on them but had forgotten that i had some of my blu-ray DVD's on there. So for ease when i actually have my computer at home i rip all of my dvd's to my Mac. This allows me to watch any movie that i own in my lounge without the need for wondering around looking for the DVD case.
the problem occurs when i rip Blu-ray's as hey come out at between 20 and 40GB a pop - quite expensive even on a terabyte disk. So i would usually drop them into handbrake and slim them out to around 10GB (dont want to loose too much of that HD goodness :P) But i have a list that wont go through handbrake - when i drop it in i just get told that no valid source has been found. (file type is MKV)
Does anyone know of another compression method that i could use to get through these? I have looked on the app store and there seems to be 3 offerings, though 2 sound like they are only tutorial videos not actual software, and the third (Kompressor) is £23 with no reviews - that is quite steep for something i am not sure will even work, or the quality of the software afterwards.
i have had that before, its more of just a plug in for quicktime isnt it to allow for playback of more filetypes? From what i remember of having it it was clunky, rarely worked and hated MKV's as much as the next player on the market.
This was all a good 2+ odd years ago though (well long enough i can only really remember snippets) So if there have been updates/changes then let me know and ill give it another shot.
well, actually, I`m VLC user, but as I know perian allows to watch MKV, and convert MKV. So, I think, you should to try to compress yours MKV to a lower bitrate with it. And yes, it is completely free.
Yeah im a VLC man myself as well, have you tried a file to file transcode? it suggests it isnt good at it, but it may be better than nothing :P
The only reason i want this ability really is because VLC disappeared off the app store, otherwise id use that to watch MKVs on my iPad.
Why couldnt there just be one all ruling format for both music and movies, damn avi, mkv, jpg, mp3, mp4 ,mpeg... Too many! cant we all just standardise?!?!
Havnt had a chance to look into it yet, been hectic with work almost coming to a close (touch wood) and had a lot to do at home as well recently - pain in the rear end i know. Will post back when i get a chance
