I just got my iPad 2 yesterday and I also got the smart cover with it but I am worried about the back of the iPad. Does anyone know any good cases that will cover the entire device but will not be too expensive?
its a hard choice for me really. I got my iPad 2 a few weeks ago now and have only just gone and gotten a smart cover (after 2 scratches on the screen - the first is always the hardest!) I think the back wont get too badly battered if one is a little carful, my issue with cases that cover the back is it ends up making the device fat and heavy - the same reason my iPhone is uncovered - so i will just deal with a smart cover and will leave the back unprotected.
just as a side note, i also dont like the thin films, i used to have them on my iPhone screen, but they bubble unless you spend 4 hours meticulously placing it on and dont last forever, so i got bored with reapplying them and just gave up :P
I ordered a Marware microshell last week on the basis that it won't bulk the iPad out too much, it looks pretty thin and has some great reviews in the USA, saying how thin and unobtrusive it is!
Smart cover is the way Midnight. I havnt had any scratches on the back, and just drop mine in the car every night - it sits there alongside all the rubbish people leave there, could end up resting on zips, seatbelts, keys, headphones etc etc.
It keeps the device super slim, to those who say that other cases that also cover the back are slim: Yes the smart cover is super slim, but its as thick as it needs to be to protect the screen, and if you were to wrap that thickness around the entire iPad to make a cover that envelopes the entire device you would soon find that you now have a fat bulk iPad 2 - steve knocks ~30% off the thickness for ergonomical reasons, not to just add a cover that makes it as fat as iPad 1
My Microshell is now in the post (shortages in the UK) - Meredi86 you're a brave soul Or maybe I'm just a scratch-free freak.
Having said that, it must be an Apple thing, as I don't really mind that much when my wife kerbs the alloys taking a chunk out of the tyres at £230 per go. Yet get a scratch on the phone or the pad and I'm depressed for a month
Lol Mark, nah im neither. I realised a long long time ago (2g 10GB iPod) that no matter what case, how hard you try or how careful you are you will get a scratch on it - you cant keep children from falling over and cutting their knee open - it is an inevitability unfortunately. and as i said previously the first scratch is the hardest, a nice little cry over it then move on, i doubt even in a case if i could keep it scratch free for the length of time i plan on having it for.
Plus had one of those spexx(i think?) red hard plastic shells on my old macbook - the plan was it ends up when i sell it looking like it just came out of the box. Nope, ok the macbook was a plastic not aluminium case, but i took it off for a clean about a month after i had put it on and have never seen more scratches on a laptop than i could see on that thing. What i assume is that the "snug tight fit" protecting case wasnt actually the right fit, there must have been 0.5/1mm of size difference that allowed the case to move almost undetected, and that is what caused the scratches - so there was my trust in those cases gone. for my MBA i have a cote et ciel case that is just open at the top, (a tight small elastic aperture allows the laptop in and out - sorry cant find a linky atm) and its amazing, slim tight fit so my MBA doesnt turn into a MBP and protects it very well - if i could find an iPad version it would be t my house now :P
hehe, yeah thats the new style of aluminium (same as on iPad btw) it is pretty scratch resistant since they moved to the brushed look over the polished look. If you remember the old mirror backed iPods they used to get absolutely nailed with scratches in about 5 mins - even when holding it by the front!
Got the marware microshell in the post this evening - it's very good with the smart cover as well - but now you're telling me I don't need it as my aluminium is top stuff!!

For information, iPod Touches still come that way... pretty disgusting after a couple of hours being used.
What really gets on my nerves is when the case I buy doesn't keep my nice shiny iPad shiny and unscratched. There's such a huge difference in quality between the many makes of covers. Where to start
