Question Just bought a mac for programming - What programs do I need?

Hey Guys,

I just bought a mac strictly for programming. I'm going to start by learning ruby, and then rails etc.

I was wondering what programs everyone here things I need, and/or if there are any good tips/hints I should know before starting?

Thanks!

All you really need are the development tools. Either by itself, or as part of the iPhone SDK. I think Ruby is included these days.

The ruby that ships with Leopard is old, and you need to setup rubygems before installing rails separately.

TextMate - the best editor around.
TextMate ? The Missing Editor for Mac OS X

Firefox together with the plugin Firebug; a must have for webdevelopers.
And of course a lot of Adobe applications.

Here are some guides to how you can setup a working Rails development environment on your Mac.
MySQL: Hivelogic - Installing MySQL on Mac OS X
Rails: Hivelogic - Installing Ruby, Rubygems, Rails, and Mongrel on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Good luck.
