Confused about windows/views

I'm used to develop iPhone apps but i'm new on MAC OS X development, i have an application on appstore and i'm trying to do a similar one for mac, it has a navigationController and tableViews.
I'm very confused about how to start, do I need many windows or just one window with many views?

I guess I would need something like preference panes, but still don't know how to make this

A View is a KIND of Window - a window that uses a NIB to (at least partially) define it's content.

If you are just going to treat the window as a canvas that you can draw on with code, use a Window. If you want to lay it out in Interface Builder, you need a View.

A window can own sub-windows. The window owning the windows can be a view, of course, as can be the sub-windows.

It really just comes down to (on iPhone) a UIView is a subclass of a UIWindow. Upon initialization, a UIView reads from a NIB.

The word "view" is really somewhat of a misnomer. It would seem to imply that it's some "other way of looking at" a Window. No, it's just a specialized kind of Window.
