Default interface builder killing computer performance

Hi,

Im having a lot of issues with performance. I mainly see the performance issues when using interface builder, ive got the latest stable release of xcode. the whole computer just slows down to a halt. it gets gradually worse over time until it gets to the point where i do something simple like drag an object (eg uilabel) or change its location on screen and it takes a long time to make the change, and during that time the computer has stopped responding. at this point if i check activity monitor, my free memory is around 0-10mb. to keep working i have to close everything down, restart the computer and go again for anywhere between 10 mins and half a day between it happening.

even after closing down every open application the memory is still in use. its just happened to me now, i closed down xcode, and my free memory went to 40mb, wired: 657mb, active: 2.14gb, inactive 1.05gb. ive got 4gb in the macbook pro.

in activity monitor ive selected to show all processes, sort by real mem, but i cant see where the memory has gone? kernel task is the highest memory user with 274mb, followed by google chrome at 123mb, then theres a dozen ranging from 72mb down to less than 10mb. it doesnt add up? where has my memory gone and what is occupying the active memory?

is this an issue with the OS, or a hardware fault? xcode having a memory leak? if i dont use IB, this does still happen, just it takes a few days to get to this stage not hours. i never turn my macbook pro off, i only turn the screen off at night and i restart it when its out of memory and needs a reboot. my pc i used for photo editing ran for a year without ever being turned off or restarted.

once im finished the ipad app im currently working on, this weekend i will be buying a 240gb SSD drive and doing a fresh install of the OS. i think ill also upgrade to 8gb memory.

is this an issue with xcode or the macbook/OS?

Did you try re-downloading a fresh copy of xcode, removing your old copy and install the new xcode sdk?

Thanks

no i havent tried re-downloading xcode. i already have the latest, and the issue has been present since i first moved to xcode 4, i have seen the issue in all versions of 4, from betas to the latest out now. i have seen posts on forums of others experiencing similar issues with xcode 4 performance with IB, but no one had any answers, and my problem goes further by closing all programs and still having most of my memory taken up as active when its actually unused, or should be unused.

Storyboard lags me a lot too with my app have something like 150+ view controllers and its getting bad. I run a macbook pro with 4gb DDR3 as well.

I wish there was a way to hide content in storyboard so it doesn't load the 90% of the app you're not currently working on.
