Default How to design levels?

Hey,

I wanna create a running game (similar to Line Runner). However, I was wondering if there is any kind of "blueprint" available which explains how the levels should be designed in order to get a perfect balance between fun and challange. E.g. when should obstacles appear, how difficult can it get, how fast should the character run etc.

Or is it simply testing, testing and testing?

Cheers!

I don't have any blueprint per se, but I can comment on the process we had in making our game.

Short answer: Testing, testing, testing. Or more precisely, Conceptualizing, building, testing, and repeat.

Long answer: Initially we wanted to have a control feel similar to Sonic the Hedghog; very fast, directional, and having players jump and fly and zip about with precision to pick up food items and bonuses. With this in mind we gradually added mechanics of movement to the character, then added obstacles, then testing the interaction of the two and tweaked, then added food items and tested the interaction between those and tweaked, again and again.
