Usernames and Passwords

I am new to iphone dev and I wanted to make an app that requires users to make a unique username and password (such as words with friends) and allows users to find each other using those usernames (such as words with friends) I would really appreciate all the help

I took a brief look at the iTunes page for "words with friends", I am not exactly sure how they did the friends thing. It could be one of a few things.

1. You invite/play friends via Game center? Although it doesn't seem to say it is Game center

2. I am not sure if its done via Wi-fi or Bluetooth, but it looks like you add people from Facebook and play with them at the same time -- this would be part of the Game Center integration, unless they use their own system?

3. They could have their own system which handles all the usernames/password; if so this means if you want to replicate it you will need to build your own system, possibiliy even building an API.

If that sounds confusing I would drop them an email to see how they did it, it might be useful to your research
