I'm just about finished making a game, unfortunately I'm not an artist so some of the art is..well a bit bad. The actual game looks great but a couple of other screens like the high scores and the how to play section are a bit lacking.
The obvious thing to do would be to higher someone but due to money issues that's not really an option. So I was wondering from your experience how would this affect my game? Do users typically see a bad high score screen and go raging about how their name doesn't look as good as in other apps?
There are many places to get free artwork on the web. If you are talking about buttons, search for one of those free web page button makers to make the images for you. You could DL Gimp for free and take a few minutes to create your own.
I would personally try to make the app as polished as possible, especially with a game, it's tough enough to get noticed as it is.
As a designer and illustrator, I have to say - you get what you pay for. Yes, there are free graphics (or in some cases, copyright questionable images) on the web, but what does that have to do with your app. Shouldn't your in app graphics be designed for your specific uses, and not be some generic clip art?
Find the money and hire a designer. You wouldn't want someone to cheap out when it came to your coding, would you? Why be cheap when it comes to the visual representation of your app?
I really hate to to say this ,but I think it depends on the situation. I've seem plenty a product out there do well, and have "not very stellar graphics". In fact some of the games I like the most have some of the poorest graphics.
I come from the world of video game industry production where we worked on polish. That doesn't always sell.
In many ways, if your product is really good, the people will forgive some poor assets. Like I said ... I hate to say it ...
Doodle Jump may not have the most impressive graphics, but they're certainly professional.
Graphics, to me, are vitally important. Many people will be looking at 3-4 screenshots of your game to decide if they're going to purchase it or not, which is entirely graphics. I'm sure you've all bought some games that you wish you hadn't, simply because the screenshots looked cool or because the game had great graphics.
Yes, gameplay ultimately keeps them coming back and giving you positive reviews, but it's the graphics that will snare them in to check it out. As long as the graphics of your game can accurately support the feel of the game, then you're in good shape.
doodle jump's graphics are excellent. from a design standpoint the compositions are great. they don't have a polished, manufactured look, but that's the intent. their target market isn't as interested in precise, pristine imaging. the ragged look appeals to its market. this kind of thing needs to be taken into account when making anything.
Yup agree with wahness. Doodle jump graphics, despite being a doodle, it is awesome art.
Yeah, it's a style, not a lack of quality. It happens to be a style that's quick and easy to do - for a skilled hand. But, hey. Now PapiJump, on the other hand, has bad graphics, which is maybe part of why Doodle Jump's makers are buying Mansions and PapiJump, despite being first, languishes in a forgotten corner on the App Store.
