You would think that after 30+ years of using computers, I should be able to adapt to a different OS. But in this case I am lost.
I am not developing for iOS, but I am having many of my Android apps built for iOS. So, I thought I should break out and buy a Mac so I can at least compile the new apps and do some small modifications after learning a little. Who knows, maybe I will be a convert after using it for a while.
To my surprise, I can not even download the x code from iTunes!
I have an iTunes account. I have a developer account. I click the "install x code" button. The little thing spins for a few seconds. Then I stare at the screen hoping something will happen, but nothing does. After 10 mins, I spend another 20 mins trying to see if the program was actually installed somewhere, but I can not find it.
Is there someone who can help me understand what is happening? Am I just stupid or what? (please don't just respond to my post with "Yes").
Thanks
Also, I have a brand new Mac Mini with 8 Gigs of memory.
What you download is an installer. You will have to run that. I don't remember when the main download actually happens, but it is huge and will take a while.

Thanks, but where do I find the file to execute it? And shouldn't it give me some indication of what the file name is? All I get is 5 seconds of downloading gif, then nothing?
There should be a rocket ship icon in your dock. Click on that and you should find it. If not, go to the Applications folder. Or hit the magnifying glass at the top right of the screen and type in "Xcode".

Nope. Only place I find anything with Xcode is using the magnifying glass which shows all the web pages I have visited and a dictionary definition of Xcode. I feel like I must be the dumbest PC user that has ever touched a Mac!
Well, you don't download Xcode from iTunes, so I'm not really sure what you actually did. You download it from the App Store. Or you can go to the developer web page and download it there, in which case it would most likely wind up in your Downloads folder.

Sorry, wrong terminology. Here is where I am downloading it from.
I normally download it manually from the iOS developers website. From the App Store link I noticed a message from a user stating:
Thanks headkaze, I am have a developer account, but that is where I started this whole process from. Can you put the exact link in the developers area where I can download it?
I don't even know where it would tell me if I had or hadn't. But I looked around, and saw nothing to indicate that I had already downloaded it.
Buttons across the top, one says "Purchases". If Xcode wasn't downloaded, it won't appear in this list. If it does appear, it will have a button on the right that will either let you install it if it isn't already, or will simply say "Installed".

That did it!! I am installed and running. Thanks so much. Just in case someone else is as lame on Apple products as me, I'll explain where I went wrong.
Two weeks ago I tried to download Xcode. In the middle of the download, I lost my cable and internet. I assumed I would just be able to start the download again as I would on a PC. I could never get back to the correct download area.
The "Purchases" at the top of the window is where I found my problem. (Thanks BrianSlick) I saw it showed my download as only about 30% complete for Xcode with a "resume" button next to it. Very different from Windows, but makes perfect sense now that I know where, and what, it is.
