MapKit Overlays

I am working on a project to overlay a custom map on top of the mkmapview. I am doing this so location features can still be used to show the user on the custom map. I found this link here but it seems to be a bit out of date on what programs and links it uses. Could someone point me to a good alternative (or at least different version) of this? My project will then add annotations to the custom map, to give different info.
