The app will not be free on the app store. By purchasing the app you get one year access to the content. After one year we need to renew for another year.
I was thinking subscription model, is that OK for apps? I have found very little information out there and this type of scenario I haven't found anything on at all.

Sounds reasonable. You would use in-app purchase of consumable content. Buying the app would give you a year's worth of content, with the option to renew with an in-app purchase.
I THINK this would be allowed by Apple, but I would suggest reading their license agreement to be sure. There are specific rules about what paid apps can and can't do. You would probably have less risk of getting rejected if the app offered some functionality after the year passed (like continuing to read archived content for the year that the customer already paid for.)
I don't know where the language is in Apple's license agreement, and would have to hunt for it too. I enjoy reading legal contracts about as much as I like oral surgery, so I'm going to leave that up to you.
