Default Memory management and IDevice count?

Hey guys is there a place that shows the statistics of how many people use idevice x? So that I know which iphones and ipods I should take into account when developing? Also is there a standard method to predict how good a game will run on a device. Like can I calculate and estimate the limit of sprites I can have on screen before the game runs to slow and lags?

Thanks a lot!

1. I think you can find some info on Google, but results vary
2. Not really without actually testing on the device. I know it's not always possible or financially acceptable, especially for indie devs, but ideally you should test on all devices you are going to support.

hmm well in that case can some people share what devices they are developing for? I want to create a 2d quality game with good graphics, but still generate decent revenue? Can I ignore iphone 3g and lower? because there is a big gap between iphone 3g and 3g onward, no?

Thanks

From what I've read, the majority of users have at least an iPhone 3Gs or it's equivalent iPod touch. (3rd gen?)

If you develop and test for that, you should be fine. That's also the minimum platform for iOS 5.

We previously tested in iPhone 3G (not S) but are going to be dropping that platform for new releases.
