Default Will an iTunes Sync restart an updated Ad-Hoc Build?

We saw something strange yesterday with one of our QA users:

- Sent out a new ad-hoc build for QA
- User drags new app (on Mac) into iTunes
- User syncs with phone
- User launches app
- Previous version still running
- Kill app with double tap home button method
- Restart app
- Newer version now running.

This is on an iPhone 4 running the latest iOS.

So, question is, if you sync a new version of an ad-hoc build over an older ad-hoc build, will the app that's getting updated be restart? I certainly though it would, but now I'm confused.

I'm fearful that user's updating in the store won't restart the app, but I find that hard to believe.
