Sound recording/Voice Recognition and matching

Hello, thanks for reading my post. I am a graphic designer with no programming skills and hope to get some answers from porgrammers.

The iPhone allows you to record yourself saying the name of a person and then use this recording as a reference when calling that person by saying the name again, matching the two recordings basically.

What is the name of this process? It's different from standard voice recognition, where the new recording is matched with some neutral recording in a database (popular with Nintendo DS games like Dr. Kawashima Brain Training).

Instead it's a 2 step process, first recording yourself, then matching the new recording to this reference.

Can this be done in an iPhone app too? For example seeing a picture of a cat and say "cat", then later use that recording as a reference? Is there an app with this feature already? Is it difficult?

this is advanced stuff (really really advanced)....you can search for Audio fingerprinting, but i don't think there is something ready to be used for iOS

not sure what you're asking here though... you want to make an app that handles with voice recording and matching, yet have no experience with programming?
I'm pretty sure it's gonna be as difficult as you ask it could be...

Thanks for the replies, so it really is advanced stuff and it's called Audio Fingerprinting.

No, I don't want to do it myself, I just want to know wether it will be possible for a single programmer. I thought maybe Apple offers it in their kit, since they use it for the dialing.

Are there any other usages of this technology in any iOS app or has nobody so far found a way to do this besides Apple? I imagine the acounstic fingerprint to be stored on the device, not online.
