I am developing a local application that will not be distributed via the App Store. After the app is finished on one iPad, is there an easy way to clone that iPad's disk image so that it can be easily put on, say 50, other iPads without registering each one through the provisioning portal?

I think you are looking for an Enterprise developer account.
If you've already signed up as an individual, can you somehow upgrade to the Enterprise program?

You need to be a company for that, and there's limitations as well. Check on developer.apple.com
Alright thanks baja.
I think I'm actually just looking for the Ad Hoc distribution. It seems that using that you can package up the project nicely and just email it to individuals so they can just drag and drop it to the device in iTunes. Since I won't need to be distributing it to more than 100 users I might try that out before upgrading.
