Light colored Toolbar & dark colored buttons

Hi,

Toolbars are almost always a dark color (ie. the default blue or black) and the Bar Button Items are white. Like this.

I want to achieve a light toolbar with dark buttons. Like this. There is no option in interface builder to alter the color of the buttons (they are by default, white).

I want to achieve something like the Articles app by Sophiestication (see the bottom toolbar and how it is a nice light shade and the buttons/icons are dark blue).

How have they achieved that? Am I missing something obvious in IB or is this a custom trick?
