A side-scrolling game is easier than a full-blown 3D shooter, but you may need to start smaller still. If this is your first game I'd suggest something even easier - try space invaders or asteroids. Then try adding some stationary obstacles and more physics. By that time you'll know most of the stuff you need for a platformer.
I know this seems like the long way around but you don't want to get frustrated from trying to bite off too much.
Cocos2D is great and fast, but I would not start with that for your first game. Use UIKit (UIImageViews) instead.
