how to view chat history

Hi,

I am a new to Objective C and Iphone application development.
What is the architecture of a chat program in Iphone, I have found that the chat history are store in mysql database instead of Iphone app. Do we need Mysql /MS sql support for a one to one chat, is it possible through steaming messages in a channel?

(My question arises because skype normally stores chat history under Documents and Settings/your_windows_username/ApplicationData/Skype , That means locally not in server). Please advice.
