Making text do actions in Interactive Storybooks

YouTube - Exploring Interactive Books on iPad with PopOut! Peter Rabbit: Ep. 142

At approx. 2:21, the host shows how you can press words on this app and it will do an action (highlighting the word, repeat it with a sound file).

How would you go about programming something like this? I know you can overlay buttons on top of static text, but that would end up being really taxing on file size and performance, especially if the view had a lot more text.

Does anyone know how they would have achieved that programmatically?

All UIResponders (UIView, UIButton, UIScrollView, etc.) can respond to touchesBegan:withEvent: and touchesEnded:withEvent:.

The Apple documentation will explain how the events are passed upward through the responder chain. But, long and short, you simply watch for touches & figure out what they pressed.

Alternately - display everything in HTML and use image maps Do it old school!
