Default What's Java's equivalent of object C's retain property?

Objective C retain property and self.object during alloc will help prevent memory leak and such.

what's java's equivalent?

and also does java have NSTimer ? call repeated to call a function at specific interval.

[NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:1.0f/10 target:self selector:@selector(some_action) userInfo:nil repeats:YES];

There isn't much Java programming happening on the iPhone, so this probably isn't the best place to ask your questions.

My understanding is that Java has garbage collection, so I imagine that retain/release has no purpose there.

Like BrianSlick said, Java has automatic 'garbage collection,' meaning that the programmer does not have to worry about memory management.
