Default show offline google maps on ipad/iPhone

Hi,

I'd like to implement custom maps in my next app and they should be usable offline. The maps should pan, pinch & zoom and I would like to render markers on top of the maps.

I've been looking at route-me (route-me - Project Hosting on Google Code) which seems to be the only solution right now for what I want to achieve(please correct me if I'm wrong). The only thing is that I can't find any instructions or reference of how to use route-me with offline stored maps.

Where I'm especially interested in is how the maps should be stored (in which format etc.) in order to work with the route-me API. I know the API works with tile-based images but how should I prepare my maps (currenty in the form of big Illustrator maps) for use with route-me?

Anyone any idea or advice where I can find these kind of instructions?

Any help is much appriciated
