How to use iPod for development?

When I first connected my iPod Touch to my mac while xcode was running it asked me if I wanted to use that device for development.
I said no, but now I want to test my apps on my device, how can I do that?

but just so I get it right: I have to sign in to the iphone developing program for 99$ a year to be able to upload my apps to my device?

You will also need the iPhone developer programma for testing app on real devices.
