is network detection outside of dev. environment?

I just started at a new internship and the product I'm working for is an application that recognizes bluetooth tags on the user's mobile phone.

They don't have an iPhone application because apple does not allow user built applications to access the bluetooth connection. right?

What if they didn't use bluetooth, could an iPhone application access wifi gateways and use these as tags?

Obviously I think that if this company is going to build a mobile phone application, that they should build a version for iPhone as well. Any ideas? workarounds?

Actually, I just came across the iOS 3.0 adding "peer-to-peer" connections over bluetooth which should be the solution that they hadn't known about.

Thanks for the article, that should be great as a WiFi alternative to bluetooth.
