Default MKMapView and span confusion

Hi,
I am trying to create a smooth zoom in effect with MKMapView.

I am confused with the term span.

I guess I din understand its concept.

When I keep decreasing the span, the map has to zoom in right ?

Now, shouldn't the span for longitude and latitude decrease equally ?

or

how can I create a smooth zoom in effect ?

thanks,

only at the equator, deltaLat goes to zero near the poles. Longitude is linear
