iPhone 3.0 beta 5 expired
About two hours ago, my iPhone 3.0 beta 5 entered the dreaded "has expired and must be updated" state along with the pink screen. So my iPhone is useless for everything including development. Is anyone else seeing this? It's a completely legit copy of beta 5.
I live in Japan which means I'm 13 hours ahead of US EDT. I'm wondering if it was set to expire today with a new release scheduled but got confused due to the time zone (could Apple be this stupid)?
I went to the apple dev site but no new beta version there yet.

My friend and beta tester of my app had his go "expired" sometime early this morning, but mine is okay. We're both on 3.0 beta 5 and we live in NY/NJ, so I don't know how or when it actually times out. I'm hoping mine doesn't bomb during the day, I'm in the middle of developing, and I can't afford the downtime from device testing and even using my iPhone normally!
No update on the site as of yet...

Not happened on my iPhone
Hi jcrbam,
I'm living in Japan, too.
Nothing happened with my iPhone (with iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5).
I can use it as usual.
Did you try to restore your iPhone?

I had the same issue on two phones (3G and 1st Gen). I downloaded beta 5 within hours of release, and it appears that the beta 5 that is now available in the dev center is a more recent build. Go to the dev center, download the new version of beta 5, and reinstall. Should work.
On one of my phones, I had an additional problem of being locked out of iTunes as the iPhone was passcode protected. iTunes said to enter my passcode; I could not, as the only iPhone screens I had access to were the purple upgrade screen and emergency calls.
I had to put that phone in restore mode (turn off the phone, turn it on while holding the power button and the home button until the apple logo shows up – about 10 seconds). To avoid fatal errors, I had to hold down the option key when I clicked the iTunes restore button – and select the newly downloaded beta 5 ipsw file. After that, all was well.
Hope this helps.

I fixed the problem and here's how I did it for reference. Note your iPhone will be erased you'll have to fully restore including iTunes reinstalling your apps and do a full sync.
Thanks to all who replied.
1) Make sure you have the latest version of beta 5 from the web site. I had the latest (7A312g) but some people reported they did not.
2) Power off your iPhone but leave it connected to your computer (I have a Mac) and keep iTunes running.
3) Hold down the Home buttons and on/off switches for about 10 seconds until it enters restore mode.
4) Hold down the option key on your Mac while pressing the "Restore" button in iTunes.
5) Select the beta 5 ipsw file and start the restore.
6) Get a cup a coffee, read a book, surf the web since you'll be waiting a while.
I was able to run after that.

What he said... except...
What he said... EXCEPT... you don't have to lose everything. You can do the option-click on the Update and use the same file. Just de-purpled my Beta 5 this way and still have all files, apps, settings, everything. Found this 'trick' out a while ago. Apple used to ship separate update and restore files. Now it's just the one that you can use for both. Of course if your phone gets FUBAR'd, then you do the restore method, but why waste time? I just did it in about 5-10 mins sitting here in Krunch Pizza in Manhattan on my laptop... no home PC required (for music, etc.)

I tired MarqueIV's method at first but no luck - about mid way through the update, iTunes would say it has an unknown error and quit the update. I recommend trying MarqueIV's method first and if that does not work, try my method.

So your beta 5 is something different then the 7A312g build? If so can you direct me to a place I can download it? I'm a beta tester and am currently out of touch with the developer who put me on his developer list. I'm using an iPod Touch 2G.

So my iPhone bricked again when the beta 5 expired upon the official release of iPhone OS 3.0. Of course none of the offiical ways apple has of fixing the problem helped.
So I found this article for installing the official release of OS 3.0 manually:
Download iPhone OS 3.0 7A341 for iPhone and iPod | iPhone | iPhone Heat
Seemed to work.

Where in the Apple Dev center can you download beta 5 again? I keep coming up with the SDK kit, can't find OS 3.0.
then I tried the following from jcrbam:

I downloaded a file called iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.zip which was a folder with a bunch of files I didn't understand, but regardless I couldn't restore anyway.
Any suggestions - where can I get and how do I install a new 3.0 OS?

When you download the file, you have to make sure safari does not try to auto-open the file. Then just remove the .zip at the end and leave the .ipsw
This should work.
